To be Great or not To be Great?

U know i've been on this get to know me spat over the past couple of days so let's keep it going.

I've talked to a few people about this and im just really not sure.

Background: When i was a lil kid i dreamed of greatness, I wanted to be the greatest preacher, the greatest ballplayer, the greatest writer, the greatest teacher.

Whatever i did i strived to be the greatest.

Growing up i realized (or was told) how prideful that is. But now that I am thinking about it: Is it or Isn't it?

Did Moses become great because he strived or God put Him into that? Did David become great based on decisions he made or the opportunities that God gave Him?

I am not writing this blog to start another predestination argument but instead to know am i pursuing the wrong thing if I am pursuing greatness? Think about it and let me know.

I'm Out!!!

I think that two things need to be put into consideration. 1. Are you using Gods definition of greatness or the world's? 2. The thing that you are trying to be great at, is that what God has called you to do? I know this may not help much. And buy answering these I don't think we will know everything ofcourse, but maybe they will get us thinking even more and get us searching for the answers.

I think that we need to give everything we are to God (including all talents and efforts) and that He will take care of fulfilling His purpose through you. To put it another way "if you will worry about the depth of your ministry God will worry about the breadth of it". Never forget it is God that gives the increase. I know that you know this but your number one concern is to enjoy your personal relationship with God and to purify yourself for His glory. Do we strive to be great? Yes, but not for our benefit but so that our lives reflect Christ's character

Well said, Jeff. I just wanted to add that if your goal is to glorify God, there's nothing wrong in putting forth effort. In fact, a passive life does little to glorify God. Certainly, reflecting Jesus is not a passive thing whatsoever. Doing things with excellence (striving to be the best) can point people to the excellent God we serve. But Jesus also said that in order to be the greatest, we have to serve everyone else and put their needs before ours. Hope that helps.

Well, God is great, God is good.... If we are striving to be like God then we have to be great and good, Right?
